Find the Right Axle for Your Trailer
Husky Trailer Parts Co. makes it easy to find what you need with our wide selection of trailer axle kits and expert support:
- Straight axle kits: The classic workhorse, straight axles offer excellent durability and ground clearance. They're the go-to choice for utility, construction and agricultural trailers that tackle rough terrain and hold up mile after mile on long highway hauls.
- Drop axles: These axles lower the trailer's deck height for easier loading and unloading. They also provide a more stable ride, making them ideal for applications where easy ramp access is a priority.
- Torsion axles: Torsion axles deliver the smoothest and quietest ride with built-in suspension that protects sensitive cargo. They're the premium choice for boat trailers, horse trailers and high-end enclosed trailers.

Frequently Asked Questions
It's important to choose the right axles for your trailer. We'll answer some commonly asked questions to help guide your decision.
How do I choose the right axle for my trailer?
To choose the right trailer axle, you'll need to:
- Determine your trailer's gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR): The GVWR is the maximum weight your trailer can safely carry, including the weight of the trailer itself. Your axle's total capacity must meet or exceed the GVWR to ensure it can safely support your trailer.
- Consider how many axles you want: Single axles offer more maneuverability, are typically less expensive to maintain and work better for lighter loads. Multiple axles can support a higher weight capacity and offer improved stability and braking, making them well-suited to heavier loads.
- Measure your trailer: Choose the right-sized axle for your trailer by measuring the hub face (HF), which is the distance from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the opposite wheel stud. You also need to take the spring center (SC) measurement, which is the distance between the centers of the spring mounting pads on the axle.
You also need to choose what axle type you want. Straight axles offer higher ground clearance, which is beneficial for rough terrain, while a leaf spring suspension provides additional shock absorption. Drop axles feature a spindle position that lowers the trailer's deck height for easier loading and unloading, while a torsion axle uses rubber cords inside the axle tube for quieter and smoother towing.
What should an axle kit for DIY trailer builders include?
The best axle kits for DIY trailer builders will include:
- An axle beam
- Leaf springs
- U-bolt kits
- A hanger kit
- Hubs and drums
- Brake assemblies
Ensure your axle kit is suited to your trailer's GVWR.
What's the difference between a tandem axle and a single axle kit for a trailer?
A single axle kit only has one axle and two wheels, compared to the two axles and four wheels found in a tandem axle kit. Single axle kits tend to cost less and add less weight to your trailer, while tandem axle kits provide a higher weight capacity, improved safety and smoother towing. Neither is better than the other — you just need to decide which one better meets your needs.
What are the differences between straight and drop axle kits?
The key differences between straight and drop axle kits are:
- Ground clearance: Straight axle kits deliver higher ground clearance than drop axle kits.
- Loading ease: Trailers with drop axles are easier to load and unload since the trailer deck sits lower to the ground.
- Stability: Drop axles provide improved stability, particularly with tall loads, due to the lower center of gravity.
- Ideal use case: Straight axles are best-suited to rough terrain, while drop axles work best when you need to transport, load and unload heavier cargo.
