Trailer Suspension Types
Depending on your application and needs, there are a handful of trailer suspension types you can choose from. There are four common types of trailer suspension systems:
1. Leaf Spring Suspension
This type of trailer suspension has been around for over one hundred years. Leaf spring suspension systems utilize slipper springs which have the vague appearance of a leaf. The slipper springs have an eye on the front and a tail of leaves on the rear which slides against the chassis to provide when pressure is applied. This utility trailer suspension system is relatively cheap and easy to install. They are not suitable for heavy load capacities.
2. Independent Trailing Arm Suspension
First seen in the landing gear of airplanes, many trailers and ground vehicles now feature an independent trailing arm suspension system. The basic set up is an arm connected between the axle of the trailer and a pivot point on the chassis. This utility trailer suspension system allows each wheel to move independently and makes for a much more comfortable ride.
3. Air Ride Suspension
Utility trailer air suspension essentially replaces the steel springs used in most trailer suspension systems with pressurized bellows of reinforced rubber that can be adjusted with an air compressor to accommodate various types of terrain or load capacities.
4. Independent Rubber Suspension
Lightweight and simple in design, independent rubber suspension systems are composed of torsion arms that attach to the frame of the trailer. Inside each torsion arm is an inner bar surrounded by 3-4 rubber chords. When pressure is applied to the torsion arm, the inner bar rotates and causes rolling compressive resistance in the rubber chords to create a quality trailer suspension system.

How to Improve a Travel Trailer Suspension
There are countless ways to improve your trailer suspension system. (2) If your utility trailer suspension utilizes slipper springs, you can inspect them for cracks and other damage like flattened or separated leaves. (3) All other components of your trailer suspension system can be inspected for any signs of damage. Visually inspect the hangers, shackle plates, equalizers, bolts, brushings and more.
