Straight Beam & Drop Beam Heavy Duty Trailer Axles
When choosing a trailer axle, it is important to consider a variety of elements to inform your purchasing decisions. Youāll want to take into account each trailer axleās load capacity, axle style, hub face length, and tire size:
- Load Capacity
- Understanding the maximum weight youāll be hauling on a regular basis is important for determining an effective axle for your trailer. The trailer axles for sale at Husky Trailer & Parts Co. range from 2,000 to 7,000 lbs.
- Axle Style
- We currently carry two styles of trailer axles: straight beam and drop beam. Like the name implies, straight beam trailer axles feature a straight beam with hubs at the end. Itās that simple. Drop beam trailer axles have more of a U-shape and sit lower to the ground.
- Hub Face Length
- This is the distance between where the wheels mount on the hub faces. This length is important in relation to the frame, tires, and overall width of your trailer. Our utility trailer axles have hub face lengths ranging from 59ā to 95ā.
- Tire Size
- Choosing appropriate tires for your trailer is equally important and very related to the trailer axles you are considering. Much like the axle, youāll want to pick tires that are capable of handling your typical load capacity and trailer application. Youāll want to do additional research on trailer tires but, in general, your tires should exceed the load capacity of your trailer axle.
How to Identify Trailer Axles
If youāre shopping for new trailer axles or replacement parts, it is always important and helpful to identify the make and model of your existing axle to immediately know the capacity information and dimensions youāll want to keep an eye out for. If you still have the paperwork for your trailer, you can easily find all this information there. Otherwise, you can typically find the capacity and dimensions stamped into your trailer axle in one of three places: (1) a placard on the frame, (2) the axle itself or (3) the hub. If you still cannot find this information, part numbers and other individual bits of information can help you determine capacity and dimensions based on the process of elimination. How to Measure Trailer Axles
There are three things youāll want to measure when purchasing new heavy duty trailer axles: hub face, spring center, and overall length. We previously talked about the hub face length. This is simply the distance from one hub face to the other. Spring center length is the distance from the center of one spring to the other. If you have a torsion axle, you do not need to worry about this measurement. Finally, you can find the overall length of the trailer axle by measuring the distance between the trailer spindles.
